I visited the Cathedral last September completely unaware that Jane Austen was buried there. How could that be? I have read her work all my life, but somehow had assumed that she was buried either in Chawton or in Westminster Abbey. They sit on her during services!

I know of your society, but up til now the project has been so huge that we have looked at it holistically. Now that we have processes in place, it becomes easier to step back and look at the individual communities. I know @simondmd.bsky.social has been watching with interest.

We have a number of teams working on different aspects. Places look at whether the place really is abandoned. Research looks at potential sources. Indexers capture references to individuals. Writers prepare community profiles.

At our last Project Board meeting, we accepted a further 16 places to be added to our master list. There are now 555 places making up our project with a further 450-odd alternative names for many of the original 555!!

@janejanealogy.bsky.social The primary goal of the People of Western Australia's Ghost Towns project is to create an index of all the people associated with those towns, but the second goal is to document everything we can find about those towns/communities/places. So I agree. :-)

Totally agree @genealogymum.bsky.social. I am loving weare.xyz and am using it to write about anything and everything - family history or not! Love it.
