The term is often traced to Greek roots meaning “soul” and “guide,” pointing to a function rather than a single being: a conductor of crossings. In esoteric symbolism, the psychopomp belongs to borderlands — crossroads, twilight, doorways, and river-crossings — where identity loosens and a new mode of being takes form. Occult traditions often read this role as Mercurial in temperament: subtle, swift, and fluent in translation between realms, with a particular concern for boundaries and safe transit. Because a psychopomp may be daimonic as well as divine, the figure also carries sacred ambivalence: not only a comforter, but a guardian of thresholds whose presence can feel testing, clarifying, and initiatory. I just realized my husband's ID badge for a job he's had three years is a photo of him taken at a wedding 10+ years ago, and I love that for him. As a woman, I'm led to believe that representing myself with an image of a person in their mid-20s would be an outright lie and kinda desperate. How fun!

"The odd charm of The Garden of Death can most likely be attributed to the fact that Death is depicted as a gentle character, as is most often the case in Hugo Simberg's work. Why is Death, the very essence of destruction, tending to the potted plants and flowers that are metaphors for life and regeneration? Simberg believed the garden of death to be a place where souls go before entering heaven. He depicts human souls as plants, almost as if man is as undeveloped compared to his paradisical self as a child is compared to an adult.
