I wrote a little book, pals. 'SOFIA COPPOLA: The Complete Unofficial Guide' is out today from @quercusbooks.bsky.social/ Greenfinch and in all good bookstores. I loved delving into Sofia's prettified & melancholy worlds. Link here: www.waterstones.com/book/sofia-c...

I wanted to include this in the opening, but word count stopped me - from Suzanne Scanlon's great book 'Committed'.

Pleased to have contributed to this @criterion.bsky.social @criterionchannl.bsky.social piece about some lesser-loved Robert Altman films. My pick: his attempt at lampooning the fashion industry, Pret-a-Porter.

For the new @empiremagazine.bsky.social I spoke with director Rebecca Miller about her excellent new five part documentary series on Mr. Scorsese. It’s out in October!

Can't believe I'm writing another post like this: RIP to a cinema giant. Claudia Cardinale was maybe the most beautiful woman in film history, but more, her unforgettable feline presence graces some of the greatest movies of all time, from Visconti to Leone to Comencini. :(

(Double posting, so what) Someone call for help, she’s got her kooky 70s auntie glasses on

RIP Giorgio Armani, king of making movie stars look cool as hell.

I'm particularly into how weird & implausible & sexy its romantic subplot is. Shoehorned? Who cares.

Had a great time introducing De Sica’s Yesterday Today and Tomorrow at BFI this evening, as part of the Sophia Loren retrospective. The audience even tolerated me referring to Marcello Mastroianni as a simp 🤭

Thinking about the (ok, MY) rising fascination with motor racing and Formula 1 and the F1 movie's enjoyable (if hyper-corporate, uncritical) masculine larks, and remembering this piece I wrote on men and cars and movies for @criterion.bsky.social:

No idea why one exposed breast in a classical painting has been flagged for adult content here, but anyway.

Went to this West End show as a bday surprise last night & it’s basically a fictionalised version of Fleetwood Mac trying not to kill each other or die of coke abuse while making Rumours. The perma-stoned Cali sound engineer, played by actor Eli Gelb (late of The Mastermind) is an absolute MVP. 🏆
