Increased yields and area under paddy have made India a rice exporter in recent years - as long as weather conditions are favourable.

Together with China and Indonesia, India is the largest producer or rice. A lot of it is grown in the north-west of the country, irrigated with snow and glacier melt runoff from the Himalayas mixed with monsoon precipitation and groundwater.
