I agree that paper rejections hurt more. Success rates are higher for papers, so are expectations. Also, grant rejections are usually not made by the panel itself; you are ranked and happen to fall below a cutoff set by budgetary constraints. So, it makes it less 'personal', it seems.

This is the saddest thing I have realized over the years. We train people to seek truth, facts, and rationality through education, but these values have little importance in politics and decision-making. When your job is to try to learn how the world works objectively, this is particularly hurtful.

Yes, this is what I meant. I often do this and it never happened that an editor told me they can’t accommodate my request.

People are shortsighted. All the physical infrastructures would be cheaper and a better investment if we had invented and created them. Same for everything else we are going to spend money on in the next decade.
