Historian interested in social movements and ideas, colonial histories, and transimperial histories in the 19th and 20th century | Book: "The Politics of Culture. Far-right, Feminist, and “Immigrant” Movements in France, ca. 1965 to 1985" | He/him
By the end of the decade, activists had become disillusioned with developments on the continent, and Africa was no longer seen as a place of hope (as depicted in Sans Frontière, 1979). These changing perceptions had implications for activism on the ground in France.

My argument in two images: In the early 1970s, activists portrayed African anti-imperialists as the avant-garde of an imminent world revolution (see Révolution Africa's poster of Amílcar Cabral).

I'm excited to see that @routledgehistory.bsky.social has published an expanded version of the special issue, 'The Cold War of Labour Migrants'. In it, my article, 'From anti-imperialism to multiculturalism' explores the global intellectual history of migrant activists in 1970s France.

Check out this very interesting CfP on "InterQueer: Crossing Queer and Intersectional Lenses in Historical Practice" if you are interested in "how queer and intersectional approaches can help us to interpret the past in a fuller and more complex manner."

I found this photo of Charles Atangana on wiki commons, without any date. Does anybody here know a way to date and contextualize this photo? Maybe through the uniforms (are they German or French)?

I am biased because he was a great colleague at grad school but I do think @hamremar.bsky.social "Fascists of the World, Unite?" is a very important contribution to debates about fascism internationalism in history and politics today. Do check it out and order it in your libraries.

One of the things that surprised me the most during my PhD research were the many political readings of Bob Marley in French activist periodicals when he died in 1981. For Sans Frontière, the "magazine of immigration," the issue after "the son of Jah died" was their most sold issue.

Today was the first session of a seminar I teach in Potsdam on "France and Migration in the 20th Century" in this very potsdamy building. Architecture-wise differently a change of scenery in comparison to the brutalist beauties at FU.

In the German national archives you can now get assistance from an AI tool to read and transcribe hand writings for the colonial records and rapidly search for people and locations. Wondering what this means for our methods.
