FDGO Stan account

How should I know if my employer shares these opinions, I'm not stupid enough to ask. Yours probably does though.

It may even border on being coherent enough with some of my other sketches that I thought were unrelated that I wouldn't have to abandon either for the sake of having a distinct theme across chapters.

Many such cases tbh, which also isn't entirely unreasonable when the best sources are primarily in English on a topic, but IIRC there are also some contributors that specifically focus on translating articles rather than writing them.

Then again, the use of TINA for shutting down critics among their own backbenchers accepting the premise of the RW opposition on e.g. immigration is probably not a surprise considering the path of Starmer (-ism) to party leadership.

There's a thatcherite "there is no alternative" vibe, but it seems odd to use it for infighting rather than against the opposition.
(around 2010 this was a thing in Germany with "Alternativlos" in the vocabulary of Merkel and her cabinet, to which the naming of the AfD was an explicit response)

Probably not great to be selecting legislators by their talent at smoothtalking rich people or operating a scam call center

Natural selection of GOP house leadership has basically resulted in the political equivalent of the Kiwi

I think the Biden admin's approach to basically taking the trump era trade policy as a defacto consensus and just layering extra industrial policy and pro (blue collar union) policy on top can just be taken as a failure, the trade part is too rotten and there is no real constituency for the rest.
November 19, 2025 at 12:59 PM
I mean, I do certainly hope she is incorrect, but it's also implicitly more of a comment on the Biden admin's approach to the tariffs introduced by Trump 1 and their rationalisation of it, rather than a serious statement on the staying power of this recent escalation.

(I'm just glad that the habil seems to be dying out in econ, so you can just write prof (name) without having to think about whether they ~really~ are a prof by german standards)
November 18, 2025 at 10:22 AM
So on top of the general ambiguity, you add a social norm of 1st name basis in English interactions with a prof-dependent preferencd in German. (Doesn't help that the Germans at the department are mostly PhD students and senior faculty only)
November 18, 2025 at 10:20 AM
I sort of miss this in my German econ department that mostly operates in English. Probably among the weirder interactions has been at faculty social event with professors who I've been on a first name basis with in English in grad classes expecting and using the formal "Sie" rather than "Du".

Given some of the people involved, what are the risks they'll just not actually do either, or the work in general, or respond with the dumbest possible "AI-driven" "solution" that won't do the work either
