Bye bye Berlin. It’s been a great few days. Grateful for chance encounters and discussions at the conference, good food, and strolls through the city.

Leaving Berlin inspired and exhausted after the @esil-sedi.bsky.social conference. Highlights included superb workshops, hearing Francesca Albanese speak, presenting to a great audience, sharing meals and stories, and conference swim breaks.

As someone who is used to speaking on the “miscellaneous international issues” panel at conferences, it was an honour to share my research with a large and attentive audience of specialists at the @esil-sedi.bsky.social Annual Conference in Berlin. I’m still thinking about the questions and comments

The pre-conference workshops were energizing; let’s see what the main @esil-sedi.bsky.social conference will bring. @cailesil.bsky.social

The @cailesil.bsky.social workshop is starting. Looking forward to discussions about international law, the genocide in Gaza, and responsibility. Thanks to @jemtseva.bsky.social @tim-lindgren.bsky.social @kanadbagchi.bsky.social for organizing & facilitating!

The @esil-sedi.bsky.social workshop panels featuring a keynote by Francesca Albanese and Eyal Weizman were a brilliant start to the event. We need to talk about how to talk about the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

Paddling along a busy river, we came across a creek we did not know. Followed it. Magical paddling experience.

The historic locks are both convenient and a great experience to use (also free this summer).

Back from a weekend of kayak camping at two Rideau Canal lock stations. Sunrise at Newboro Lock, sunset and storm at Davis Lock.

The entire handbook is a gem. It contains a wealth of chapters that conceptualize key concepts and issues in politics and society from the perspective of the Global South. Shireen Hassim & Anna Korteweg have been amazing editors. e-elgar.com/shop/usd/handb

Other authors have sketched a variety of techniques of producing ignorance. In our case we highlight: insistence on uncertainty (as opposed to denial), rejection of external knowledges, over-valuing of own institutional knowledges, and a lack of effort to know more & better. 3/

We (@helyehdoutaghi.bksy.social, Hijaab Yahya & me) draw on Mills' observation that white supremacy rests on generating ignorance about the violence it inflicts. The connection between oppression & the production of ignorance can be observed for different forms of domination. 2/

New co-authored chapter alert!
What if we think of institutional ignorance as a practice and achievement rather than a failure? Using the case of the US military's responses to civilian casualty allegations as an example, we develop suggestions for researching organized ignorance. 1/

Watching the swan families around the lake was amazing. One parent pair had eight cignets. The family we saw the most had four young ones.

If I don’t respond to your email, it might be because I’m fully professor now.

Achievement unlocked: July 1st marks 20 years at Carleton, promotion to Full Professor, and beginning of the sabbatical.

Results: 21 cyclists and 80 pedestrians within two hours (midday) on a hot day. There was a lot more nearby traffic that wasn’t part of the count. I’m also sad that the very good dogs didn’t count. Maybe next year?
