I’ve been emphatic on the need for our community to place a chasm between ourselves and conservative American evangelicals given their regressive social views. This is one of the more egregious examples of what I mean.

"Dangerous Tales: Genesis 34 and Its Literary Descendants" by Carrie A. Cifers is a new book on a troubling chapter of the Bible, Genesis 34 which details the rape of Jacob's daugher Dinah and the massacre of the family of the rapist by two of Jacob's sons.

There are Christians including many in my denomination who support Trump's regime and are enthusiastic defenders of Elon Musk. I sincerely hope they can live with the guilt.

Reading the prophetic and apocalyptic literature in the Bible as if they predicted “tomorrow’s news today” is a gross failure of genre recognition, which has let to fanciful ideas such as an alliance of English-speaking nations against Russia, an idea looking quite fanciful. /1

This is the public face of American conservative Evangelicals, and it is an ugly one. Within a day, when the far-right Trump regime takes power, masked armed officers will rounding up "illegal aliens" for expulsion, an action which may excite Evangelicals, but will disgust civilised people. /1

Unfortunately, the anti-intellectualism that blasts out from these church signs is entirely representative of conservative Protestant Christianity which I suspect deep down knows that it cannot survive an encounter with facts so anathematises them. /1

The moral values espoused by conservative evangelicals / Christian Nationalists is toxic and results in women being murdered by their husbands. Anyone who advances this perversion of morality cannot call themselves a follower of Jesus.
