Mamdani's plan to set up city-sponsored stores - which would be exempt from paying rent or taxes, would partner with farmers and small businesses to offer groceries at wholesale prices and with no plans to make money - is in response to soaring food costs.

I Remember driving back to NYC from Ohio where I was canvassing for Obama, listening to NPR all the way. In the morning the news reported on his glorious win. At noon he faced enormous challenges. By evening his presidency had been declared a failure.

My ofrenda on the mantel in my apartment. On the bottom tier are photos of my dog Captain Jack Sparrow, who died in January, along with his collar and an impression of his pawprint. To the right are the necktie and a book written by my friend Tom who passed in July, as well as the program from his memorial service. On the upper tier are photos of my dad, who died three years ago, and of Tom, as well as a box of miniature Catrinas. Above that are photos of my grandparents, my sister in law, and an artwork I made with rose petals and the Virgen de Guadalupe. Papel picado hangs above the ofrenda. Trump's skill is that he has been able to find that one thing that people hate so much they will sell out their own interests to destroy it - trans people, immigrants, abortionists, Muslims, Black people, the list goes on. He has assembled a coalition of the haters (and a party of the fearful).
The way out of our present age of political violence is not scolding "we have to live here with one another," at those who are not threatening anyone's life, at those whose very existence supremacists refuse to accept. Rather the way out is standing between supremacists and their targets and telling them "no, you have to live with them, just like we live with you, and if you can't do that, then you have a problem with us, too." It's turning to those who just aren't comfortable with trans people and saying "we don't negotiate about people's rights over here, and if you want to see how hard we'll fight for you against the billionaires and bosses who are robbing you blind, watch how hard we fight for them. If hating trans people is so important to you that you're willing to get robbed to death to secure it, we aren't the party for you."

Somehow it had escaped my notice that I will be voting on whether to create a new digitized map for NYC.

NGL, a large part of me is inclined to preserve our Dickensian system of 8,000 paper maps.
Question 4: Create a centralized digital city map Currently, New York City’s official map — which includes street layouts and address assignments — exists in paper form across five separate borough offices. This proposal would consolidate those into a single, digital map maintained by the Department of City Planning. “Today, the City Map consists of five different sets, one for each borough, totaling over 8,000 individual paper maps,” the report says. “The Commission heard testimony, including from practitioners and former Borough President staff, that this system can impose significant costs and time on infrastructure, housing, and other projects, and that consolidation is long overdue,” the report adds. A "yes" vote would create a centralized mapping system. A "no" vote would maintain the current setup.
