And there’s plenty more to see too: Saqqara, the GEM, Old Cairo, Bubastis and Tanis, Rosetta, Alexandria, Abydos, Luxor and two further special permits, for Herakleopolis and Antinoopolis respectively. CANNOT WAIT for the first departure in October this year, and now this second departure too!

Very excitingly, this time we have secured permission to go into the Grand Catacomb in Alexandria, which was the subject of my ‘Baths of Cleopatra’ research in lockdown: chrisnaunton.com/2020/12/08/t...

And finally, I get to enter the temple with AWT next year on this trip: www.ancient.co.uk/holiday/temp... If you’d like to join me you’d be very welcome – there are still a few places left!

The temple’s reliefs would also have been fabulous, as many examples scattered around museum collections show, but they survive only in thousands of fragments which have never even been properly studied. Robert Anderson Trust alumnus Maarten Praet is putting that right now with his doctoral research

The latter was inspired by the architecture of Mentuhotep’s temple which may have been every bit as impressive although you’d never know it now as it hasn’t had been restored in the way the Hatshepsut temple has....

A long time ago I wrote about the discovery of the temple of Mentuhotep by Naville for the EES’ newsletter: www.academia.edu/1349590/A_Hi... It always seemed to me to be a great story & that the temple has been unfairly overlooked by comparison with its neighbour, the temple of Hatshepsut.
August 1, 2025 at 7:20 PM
And in addition to that & loads of other stuff in Luxor we’ll also be visiting AWT favourite the tomb of Senusret III at Abydos – badge of honour to all those who manage the clambering all the way to the very end and back 😊 Come and join us! www.ancient.co.uk/holiday/temp...

Sneaking in another photo of me too - don’t normally like having my camera hijacked on the presumption that I don’t know how to use it and must want photos of myself, but I admit this one is ok, so thank you to @el_bertawy_photography for taking it!

This was such a fun shoot. Big thank you to the team: Director Sigrid, DoP Josselin, second cameraman Anthony, local producer/fixer Mohamed, Khaled and the boys. Finished product due on French television at Christmas time, and internationally thereafter!

Mosque complex of Kalawoun. Beautiful architecture and partially built with stone from ancient temples (photographing spolia gave me a good chance to get a good pic of Sigrid’s cool skate shoes!)

…but the cloisters around the sides were cooler, and clearly a wonderful place to sit and read. Wish we’d had more time…Funny moment when someone thought I’d left my shoes behind when I went wandering only to find that I had mine with me, and some else was perhaps looking for theirs… (2/2)
