Even the basic premise of "NY Housing is expensive, which is why we live here" feels way, WAY too timid to be relevant in 2025.

"At the risk of being didactic..." writes @drfionamoore.bsky.social in her feedback, before making a wonderful suggestion that recontextualizes the entire story and makes it obvious how I fix the ending. 😅

That said, I saw BoM for the first time a few months ago, and wasn't convinced you could stage it as a *new* show today. There's something very uncomfortable about West End actors depicting dirt-poor, naive, brutalised, AIDS-suffering Ugandans on stage while a white audience laughs.

It's hard to make anything impervious to bad readings. See how many people miss the point of Fight Club or the Northman, or Coppola making two sequels to the Godfather just to underline "Michael is the villain" with ever-increasing emphasis.

It's not directly relevant, but I'm reminded that without Lady With an Ermine, Phillip Pullman wouldn't have invented Daemons.

Very this. And even if artist's weren't intending narrative (which... lol), humans project emotion, memory and narrative onto *abstract* paintings, let alone portraits.
