Many states are counting on strong electric vehicle sales to meet ambitious climate goals. Without federal incentives, reaching those targets will require much more local effort.

Transportation agencies often promote engineers to leadership roles, but Madison DOT (like some state agencies) is taking a different approach. By promoting non-engineers, they're rewarding diverse expertise and freeing up engineers to focus on design work. media.cityofmadison.com/Mediasite/Sh...

Coincidentally, this just came up here in Madison, Wisconsin. Like many others, the city doesn't want to pay for the road. They also cited challenges with the road being part of the National Highway System.

The Plan Commission in #MadisonWI approved two developments last night. One pretty close to downtown; another on the far edge of the city.

I voted for both, because we need the housing, but I feel like we can do better.

Traffic deaths in the U.S. have continued their slow decline since the pandemic, according to NHTSA. But we haven't seen rates this high since around 2008. www.nhtsa.gov/press-releas...

BRT stations are taking shape on State Street in Madison, Wisc. These were scaled down from their original design after business owners raised concerns that they’d be too intrusive.

I realize academic writers love acronyms, but sometimes a camera is just a camera.

From some DIY Man Cave group: "My dream has always been to live in my garage [...] Plan is, 30x40 steel building, room for 3 cars, and a mezzanine [...] with a 2nd floor bedroom/office overlooking the cars."

I’m getting ads for stuff people apparently need to buy because their vehicles are too large for an average adult male to wipe the hood.

Two weeks after it closed, Madison's Lake Street garage is coming down. In its place will be a new public parking garage, an intercity bus terminal, and private development above. madison.com/news/local/g...

Apparently a consultant for Michigan DOT found one mile of rail construction produces 400X the GHG emissions as one mile of road. 🤔 Now they're compelled to show the benefits outweigh the impacts.

This is from a webinar hosted by AASHTO's Center for Environmental Excellence.

The pandemic made it super clear how important VMT is in driving transportation emissions. But this report from the California Air Resources Board shows the same relationship during the recession. ww2.arb.ca.gov/sites/defaul...

A site that used to be a fence company and storage lot in Madison's vibrant Marquette neighborhood will soon offer almost 200 apartments with ground floor retail.

Something seems wrong here.

A teen "ignored" a walk signal (while trying to catch the bus, then got hit by a driver who fled).

While a driver "misread" a red light (causing a rollover crash that sent someone to the hospital).

The recent rise in pedestrian deaths has happened almost entirely at night, according to the Times. Theories range from cell phone use to new patterns of poverty.

Interestingly, pedestrian deaths from smaller vehicles are also up more than 70%, suggesting larger vehicles can't explain it all.

Bus ridership in Madison, Wisconsin, passed 1M in October, a 20% increase from last year. The city launched a new bus network with @humantransit.bsky.social in June and ridership seems to be spiking since summer.

Staff says the real increase is >26% due to how students and transfers are counted.

Thanks to my team at the State Smart Transportation Initiative for supporting our work with some of the most committed and influential transportation leaders from across the country.

Our community of practice for state officials always reminds me why we do what we do.

I've been hearing this a lot: center-running buses force people to cross traffic.

I currently have to cross six lanes to catch the nearest bus. Pretty soon, I'll cross three in the morning and three in the afternoon.

(Do I wish it was fewer? Sure!)
