Lost in all of the talk about tariffs is probably the most important aspect of free trade: It prevents wars.

While there will be lots of articles in the next few days about the impact of tariffs on global markets and the economy, I am more concerned about their impact on global peace.

Are colleges indoctrinating students?

I'm quoted in this excellent long-form piece by Guillermo Molero at @bloomberg.com about Civics Institutes at major American universities and the extent to which conservative students can express themselves on campuses.

Then, at 1:45, in Room 11 - Georgia, @c2initiative.bsky.social research affiliate and W&M scholar @melwhat.bsky.social and I will be presenting our work with Shinji Katsumoto (So. Miss.) on the impact (or lack thereof) of campus shootings on international student enrollment in the US.

Steve will be showcasing his incredible work on unionization efforts in higher education. @riacton.bsky.social will be presenting her work with Emily Cook on COVID-19 and Higher Ed (with lots of nods to @c2initiative.bsky.social data). I'll be talking about how universities lobby Congress.

First they came for UNC, but I did nothing because my school’s colors were not light blue.

Then they came for Columbia, but I did nothing because my school’s colors were not light blue.

Then they came for Maine… and Johns Hopkins said, “well, %#*$!”

So much potential drama here. A Roma-Lazio final? A Jose Mourinho redemption tour, with Fenerbache maybe having to face Roma, Man U, and Tottenham to win the Europa League? A potential Rangers-Frankfurt rematch?!

Too good. Just too good.

Buried in the President’s executive order on DEI programs is a section requiring agencies to investigate major foundations, corporations, and universities with endowments over $1B.

Effectively, DEI efforts will be investigated at the wealthiest institutions - but not elsewhere.

Do not forget that birthright citizenship is the norm in the Western Hemisphere, not the exception (which makes sense given the Americas' liberal and revolutionary histories).

I'm still so fascinated by this paper. The identification strategy is so clever. Basically, students were assigned to busing based on race and the first letter of their last name - not random, but pretty darn close. Just amazing work. And the description of the history is really well written.

Fascinating new @nberpubs.bsky.social working paper from @edankaplan.bsky.social, Cody Tuttle and Jörg Spenkuch that shows long-run effects of busing to desegregate schools in KY in the '70s:
• ⬆️ Alignment with the Democratic Party
• ⬆️ Support for redistributive programs
• ⬇️ Belief in a "just world"

You think your on-campus parking pass is expensive?

Our College Crisis Initiative students looked into the distribution of parking pass prices at major colleges and universities. These data are provisional, but the prices for a year-long student parking pass range from $0 to nearly $4,000!
