Loans of skeletal material get returned in crates. Had to work on my gift wrapping skills.

Thanks @amnh.org and the Field Museum for the loans!

After 11 months in review, grateful to learn that my NSF proposal examining the ecomorphology and evolution of mammalian skull dimorphism was awarded!

Stay tuned for research on intraspecific effects on maroevolution and more undergrad-led projects! @uwbiology.bsky.social

Great day at the UW Undergraduate Research Symposium!

Over the last two years, my mentees learned to develop hypotheses, collect data, code, and present results. All of this would not be possible without NSF support.

New 🦦 paper in @anatrecord.bsky.social! I quantified the growth curves of theoretical bite force & jaw musculature in sea otters. Newly weaned otters are at a disadvantage in foraging until the early stages of adulthood when they reach full skull & biting maturity

New paper with @tsengzj.bsky.social and @hlusko.bsky.social! We investigated the adaptive landscape of skeletal form & function in carnivorans and tested how trade-offs among skeletal regions contribute to adaptations & landscape topology. @sicbjournals.bsky.social

Lastly, contrary to predictions of adaptive radiation, we found that Malagasy carnivorans do not exhibit rapid species diversification and only marginally faster rates of skull shape evolution compared to other feliforms.

We also found evidence of shared adaptive zones in cranial shape between euplerid subclades and felids, herpestids and viverrids but little evidence of convergence.

We found that their skull disparity exceeds that of any other feliform family (i.e., cats, mongooses, hyenas, genets), as their skulls vary widely and strikingly capture a large amount of the morphological variation found across all feliforms.

Although there are only eight living species, these carnivorans exhibit remarkable phenotypic and ecological diversity that is hypothesized to have risen through an adaptive radiation and convergent evolution.
