The Problem with Executive Spending Beyond impoundment, the administration has redirected funds to finance Republican-favored priorities without clear authorization, including: redirecting $8 billion in military research and development funding toward military personnel salaries, drawing from an unspecified source of funding to cover payroll for FBI agents, pulling an unspecified amount of money from the One Big Beautiful Bill to pay ICE officials, resuming operations at the Farm Service Agency (FSA) to help distribute $3 billion in farm subsidies through the Commodity Credit Corp., and using $300 million from prior-year tariff revenue to fund WIC, a food welfare program.

Just and rational punishment has never been a hallmark of the twin crusades against drugs and guns. These long-running policies both aim to promote safety, and they are often rationalized by the rhetoric of saving children and protecting public health. Drug control and gun control are symbolically potent. But there is little evidence that either has had a positive impact and much evidence that they have caused serious harm. Both criminalize conduct that violates no one's rights, leading to unjust arrests, harsh prison terms, and the erosion of civil liberties, especially the right to armed self-defense and protections against unreasonable searches and seizures. The burdens imposed by these two public safety strategies reinforce each other, since gun possession increases penalties for drug offenses and drug offenses disqualify people from legally possessing guns. Those burdens fall disproportionately on people of modest means and members of racial and ethnic minorities—a fact that progressives frequently decry in connection with the war on drugs but tend to overlook when the disparities arise from enforcement of gun laws. And while progressives often note the racist roots of drug prohibition, they are less apt to recognize that gun control has a similarly sinister history. There is a corresponding disconnect among conservatives, who tend to be skeptical of gun control but are much more inclined to support drug prohibition. Austrian Deep Ecology Economics 🌱
Dave Prychitko Mainstream environmental economics focuses on the costs and benefits, particularly at the margin, of environmental damages and abatement. The theory is kind of a nuts-and-bolts approach. And I taught a lot of that material -- the course couldn't be taught without it -- in my final five years at NMU. And that's fine up to a point. But this narrow approach not only ignores the human subjectivity and phenomenology of cost and benefit, it ignores deeper values and alternative orientations. It would find, for example, deep ecology incomprehensible, as it rests upon a biocentric or ecocentric orientation, as opposed to the economist's anthropocentric and individualistic methodology and analysis. I myself have embraced the deep ecology perspective, and so in a way I am glad that I no longer have to teach students the Marginal Environmental Damage vs. Marginal Abatement Cost graphs and mathematics anymore. Now I just want to experience nature and the wild -- or what remains of it -- and defend it against destruction and human stupidity.

Yes, even in the middle of a “government shutdown,” the State Department apparently has staff and resources available to: Monitor social media for negative opinions about ONE GUY; Determine whether the people expressing those opinions are abroad or in the US; If the latter, determine whether those people are US citizens/residents or visitors; and If the latter, revoke their visas. I can’t help but think we’ve found a good place for Donald Trump to implement those permanent “Reductions In Force” he recently promised as “shutdown” measure (unfortunately, a federal court has those layoffs on hold via temporary restraining order).

Eric Brakey Six years ago, I said confidently that Donald Trump was the "greatest President of my lifetime." I could say it in truth, but it was also reserved and faint praise because of how terrible all the others had been. (It was a low bar to jump over!) Today, if the trends of these first few weeks continue — negotiating peace and cutting the DC bureaucracy — I believe I will be able to say confidently that Donald Trump has been the best President of many lifetimes. Eric Brakey I was detained by Border Patrol and Customs for 90 minutes coming back from a @RoyalCaribbean cruise today in Florida. After they rifled through all my belongings, read my personal journal, and confiscated my phone and computer, I had to explain to them that the @FreeStateNH is a non-violent, peaceful libertarian movement that builds community, culture and political change. We were invited to New Hampshire in the early 2000s by the Governor of the state. We reject violence as a path to creating change. In detail, I had to explain the nature of the Defend the Guard movement and assure them that I was not part of a violent extremist group seeking to raise a militia for insurrection against the government. At one point during my detention, I asked for clarification on what rights I had here as a U.S. citizen and was told that they did not need a warrant for anything in my possession, including all my electronic devices. They eventually let me go. Truth be told, I am shaken up and in shock right now.
