I use a jig to hold and position my gauges against the grinder but my tutor who has been a professional turner for over 40 years grinds all his gauges and chisels freehand with no jig and gets a perfect edge and shape every time- amazing to watch!

I have an oil stone that I use for my skew chisel to keep it’s edge in good condition so I might only grind the skew chisel once every few years unless I damage the edge by dropping it or discovering a stone or nail in the wood! (Very rare thankfully)

… in order to get a sharp edge. Indeed if the grinder produces sparks then too much pressure is being applied! I then use a diamond honing plate to hone the edge and regularly apply more honing while I turn so as to reduce the need to return to the grinder so often.

I use CBN (cubic boron nitride) wheels on my grinder for grinding my chisels. The key, as I’ve been taught, is to use the most gentle pressure to apply as little force as possible against the grinder as wood turning chisel tips are very expensive and one shouldn’t need to grind much at all …

As I progress along the journey of becoming a wood turner I have been learning the difference between grinding, sharpening, and honing my chisels and gauges.
