A great week of films. I'm picking Heat. Crime masterpiece. Blessed to see De Niro and Pacino together, at the top of their games. Amazing set-pieces, beautiful cinematography, atmospheric music - what's not to like. Mark will choose Chaplin.

As much as I love Back..Future and Apollo 13, neither of them has helped high numbers of people find more articulate ways to express their feelings #InsideOut

Mark will invariably choose Punch Drunk Love, as its a fave of his. Hollywoodland is an underrated film, with a great Ben Affleck performance. My pick is Chris Reeve documentary, Super/Man. You'll believe a man can fly....

Tim Robey's book, Box Office Poison, led me to watch Speed Racer for the first time recently. Its a mess but full of ingenious moments from the outset - a child's drawing transforming into an actual race. Plus Roger Allam going all the way up to 11 as the villain.

The 2012 Olympics opening ceremony is unimproveable. For movies, its hard to explain to younger listeners just how huge Trainspotting felt, when it came out in 1996. Ultra non-cineaste friends felt compelled to see it twice in its first week. It led to "Cool Britainnia" period (for better/worse).

Saltburn could be in the not-list - a very marmite film (& not to my tastes). 127 Hours should be one of the runners and riders in this week's One Frame Back. Spider-Verse my favourite. Mark will choose They Live - as I'm sure he'll have a tale about the first time he saw it in '88.

As a kid, I loved Disney's Apple-Dumpling Gang - one of its funniest 70s live-action films. The Oceans movies feature a great ensemble, but ended up becoming a bit too pleased with themselves. With another sequel currently mooted, also wanted to shout out Young Guns, a VHS favourite.

Lovely tribute, Simon. As a long-term reader of Empire, Barry played a huge part in my love of film. Your positive experience only chimes with the wit and charm that jumped off the page in those early editions. Rest-in-peace - my condolences to his family.

Great Gatsby has prescience (Sarah Wynn Williams referencing "Careless People" in her Facebook expose) and Kevin Costner looks very stylish in "3 Days" with his Teal Scarf of Death, so it should be Wrath. 3D versions of the Machai were unforgiveably bad, ushering the end of that particular era..

"Irritating Rabbit" isn't good but director Will Gluck subsequently showed himself to be a thoroughly decent chap in his defense of the sequel. My vote goes to Daddy's Home; PS I Love You is risible, but did not spawn an unwanted follow-up involving The Tanchurian Candidate's Special Envoy

I love "Far & Away" and the Cruiser's Oirish accent is part of the fun "Oi Shannon, You're a Corker".

Would love a shout-out to the Etterys of Sligo, Ireland (with their own dodgy accents). Loving the show since '97...

Here Comes the Boom, which could be any number of lame films from the 2010s produced by Adam Sandler and starring Kevin James. Geostorm should get a mention, if only so we can hear ‘Shut Up Butt Wot’ again.
