We got this old fellow OTD in 2014. He'd been abused, suffered anxiety, and loved like no one has ever loved before. He ate most of a room. He chewed his way out of a cage. He knocked over Christmas trees, climbed out of our fenced-in yard and escaped, and then he died. No other death haunts me so.

What is really happening here: Trump is experiencing cognitive dissonance. He is a narcissist, and can't fathom that the world isn't an extension of himself. People are paying attention to someone who isn't him. He is the small child, and the Universe just told him, "Because I said so."
