According to The Guardian and National Geographic, the photo is of an actual nightclub. The photographer is excellent.

Ah that makes sense. I hadn't thought of it that way.

The first one is not from a filmset, it was taken by Volkmar K Wentzel for National Geographic. The second photo was taken by George N. Barnard, an American Civil War Army photographer. Slavery was abolished in 1865 in the United States, and the main clue was a storefront for slave auctions.
