Evolutionary biology attracts a hinterland of people who are uncomfortable with its ideas, which seem to them cold and unsympathetic ... hence attempts to show that Darwin's model is incomplete in some way, such as the EES ... and now "agency"

Yes, they are superlative at regurgitating "received wisdom" ... which is the exact opposite of thinking

don't know, from this period ... but here is a similar effect in a Tibetan apron from the 1960s ...

It may be a dyer's thing ... dyers will make sure to use all of expensive materials like lac by dipping yarn repeatedly until the dye bath is exhausted. Weavers put these progressively lighter shades together, making this shaded effect. Still done by Tibetan and Andean weavers today
