for big numbers I prefer 10^6, 10^9 10^ 12 etc. not British or US, just numbers. No ambiguity. And 10^37 is a milliband just for kicks and giggles.

sf = simplefeatures. A spatial data format in R. You can read shapefiles and other file types in, though. The sf package can do things like change map projections, see which points are in which lsoa and do on...

You can do this with R, provided you have the LSOA boundaries as sf. Transform yr data into an 'sf' object then to uk national grid projection. Then a spatial join to the LSOA object and do a 'count' on LSOA codes. It might even do the projection transform on the fly. TL/DR check out 'sf' in R.
