"an already elusive subject is considered here from a variety of oblique angles"
On the one hand I don't like the term Pasokification, because it seems to me awkwardly to oscillate between a narrower & a broader meaning (a specific story of corruption & collapse vs a centrist party I don't happen to like). But, yes, I know what you mean.

In less odd circs, maybe by 2029 the economy will be doing OK, cost-of-living crisis abated, NHS waiting lists falling & the Govt re-elected. But that Govt has placed a bet that if they spend 5 yrs abusing their usual electorate that that will somehow pay off for them--& that is not obvs the case.

And the fundamental problem is that instead of doing the normal democratic thing & looking to reward their actual voters, the Labour high-ups have convinced themselves they need to pander to a fantasy of racist working-class "hero voters" (don't ask) who haven't voted Labour in decades & never will.

Yr basic instinct is a good one, but... on the one hand the Government is all-tactics-&-no-strategy, so avoids having a medium-term plan concerning wtf they are actually doing w. that big majority, & on the other hand all those tactics are visibly failing, & failing badly by whatever metric you use.

I mean, people don’t like inflation and they don’t like being insulted - this government has driven up inflation and insults its voters.

(One of the many oddities about this v. s. but w. i. minority is that whereas the original “Red Wall” thesis was about how places that didn’t vote the same way as everywhere else were now voting the same way as everybody else, they turned it inside out to become the opposite to how it started.)

My sister was once going through some very old lecture notes and realised that she must have misheard something, because there were references to "ruthless cosmopolitans".

And a much better film than at least one of his choices.

One way of telling the political story of the last ten years is of three wasted overall majorities.

A substantive majority in the Commons for a full term is the greatest prize the UK constitution can bestow on a PM, and three times in a row, it has been wasted by those prize-winners.

I hope the government officials who are monitoring us are having fun.

Part of the complexity in this instance is that the people briefing about the other guy challenging their guy never actually wanted their guy. Their guy was a way to get the other guy who they really wanted & who they are now briefing against, making their guy look weak and embattled.
