A *Bach-keyboard-suite*-themed novel was advertised in the American Bach Society newsletter. I don’t see how I can call myself a scholar of the Bach keyboard suites and not read this. I’ll report back.

We had a lot of fun with this! Some fantastic compositions, all of them completely new to me, and wonderful performances.

Only about 30 more hours for this passage to haunt my nightmares 😬

Don’t even think about asking me how adding in the right hand is going

I feel like such a bad pianist when I just bite the bullet and write a fingering for every single note, but sometimes it feels like that’s what will just get me out of my head and let me move on 😂

Who will out themselves as my kind of nerd by liking this brilliant little poem

Just a couple of janky phone photos here, but (relative to the score you can see in that youtube video) notice how much larger the noteheads are and how much less white space there is, without it looking even the slightest bit cramped. It's much easier to read!

The piece's A section is all about this motive, whose top note A5 can be harmonized in a variety of ways, but despite that yearning upward leap, can never go higher than A5. Until, of course, the best note in the whole piece.

Seriously though, it IS that note, the high B in m. 82—which breaks, on something like the 7th attempt, the registral ceiling of A5 established for the piece's opening motive in m. 2

My theory is that since the previous page had several measures of music in this similar (*but very different*) texture, whichever guy was in charge of engraving all those bracketed 3's went on autopilot, with goofy results
September 15, 2025 at 6:14 PM
Genuinely what am I missing here. These 3's are nonsense, right?

I honestly love how, if you know how to read a baseball score, this tiny bit of information can only mean a walkoff grand slam
