My parents inspired me to stay out of both their careers (teaching and local government)

I wouldn't mind if either of mine became an engineer though

I did tech for a boxing event - started with boxing, then kick boxing (first regular, then Thai).

They *really* kicked the shit out of each other. There was blood. I would not have fancied a go in that ring. This was a largish commercial event, but not high level

LaTeX doesn't do this though: www.instagram.com/reel/DIMkKkq...

It generally gets section numbers and references right too, both of which word often seems to trip over

I fear rail electrification is being done exceedingly slowly, to the extent that we're still building new un-electrified for cost reasons.

Yes Hydrogen / batteries can *help* but I don't think I've met anyone who doesn't argue that, at least for well used lines, electrification wouldn't be better.

Terry Pratchett as ever hast he definitive quote on that

"...They only stopped using trial by ordeal when they discovered trial by lawyers was worse"

Having worked a student for our students union and thus seen how the student politics sausage is made, I'd ideally ban any involved from absolutely anything and everything, forever.

Especially an island nation that sometimes has excess wind power that needs using: just use that to split water instead of paying them not to generate.

Ideally distribute the splitting close to where it's needed, because storing \ transporting Hydrogen is tricky

Agree with all three of these

I don't think I noticed that at the time, I just googled it and it turns out that really happened.

There's a popular two axis graph that does
left vs right
authoritarian vs liberal

Labour is solidly Left-Authoritian.
The Tory's used to be a broad church of Right-Authoritian -> Right-Liberal, but seem to have ejected all the liberals.

Lib dems are the most liberal we get

I mean....they might have sent someone an email with the wrong time in it, telling them when to hit upload?

Finance types don't tend to be IT types after all.*

But yes, obliviously you're right on this

I'm told by those more historically literate than me (most people tbh) that during the Napoleonic wars we was the last time we managed something approaching self sufficiency

All of Europe experienced bad weather, then famine caused by a volcano about then + the whole war situation

This is fully the life of a software engineer.

"When I wrote only God and I knew how it worked. Now only God knows"

All one can do is write code with the fact you may be the one to maintain it in the future in mind. Or worse someone who doesn't know who think may have too

Ah yes, but in 20 years time it will some other government's problem

Fairly narrowly beat a prominent Gaza independent as I recall, helped by him not having much appeal other than Gaza.
He is now due in court over unrelated money laundering: www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Until I heard the words "Blue Labour" I had high hopes for her
Birmingham MP candidate accused of money laundering has trial set
Lawyer Akhmed Yakoob will face trial in August 2027, a court has heard.

why do I emphasize the Manchester-ness of this? because Blue Labour 'thinkers' try to portray themselves as authentic representatives of a neglected Northern working class. But while there's plenty of racism in the North, as anywhere else, there's also a long history of integration and anti-racism.

I don't disagree, I just feel that's a very low bar

To be fair the way she governed raises questions around whether she ever had her mind, and chasing money is 100% of what she's done since she was so unceremoniously defenestrated

Yeah,
Good faith (but bad consequences) error by a member of the public pointing the finger at the wrong person.
This is why getting the police to release everything early on has so much scope to go wrong
