10 I don’t want to put living well in a box or for dying well to be written in anything but pencil.
Yes,my stepfather had a slow, difficult death due to Alzheimers and it meant that he left us in pieces instead of all at once.
Saying goodbye to him was complicated, but worth doing.
Love is like that.

9/10 I think sometimes we can know the last time we do a thing and that can be sad and strange and beautiful.

But it’s also possible that it’s beguiling to never know the last time we will taste that flavor, smell the special scent or say someone’s name.

8/10 There was goodbye (and a stolen brownie) and goodbye (can I carry the dog?) and goodbye (thank you for the hug) and goodbye (thank you for having me over; this was top notch).

He’d said so many good goodbyes that really, did he need the Final One?

7/10 Or at least we should.
David sadly did not get to say goodbye one final time to the Grandchildren, which is a regret one might have. But he did say goodbye to the Grandchildren almost weekly for the past year even after he stopped knowing their names and who they were.

6/10 So each life will have some “unfinished.” What can be bad is never saying you’re sorry, though if you’ve lived your life well, they will know. What can be bad is leaving those behind unprepared. But it should never be any single preparing those left behind. We all share that responsibility.

5/10 The vision is completion. The desire is contentment. Even the punitive demand for contrition comes with an idea of being right w/all. But Death is not actually good or bad. What can be bad is Never Finishing, and I feel if we are lucky, we finish some things in life, but then there always more.

4/10

I don’t know how many reflective, contented (and for goodness sake, contrite?) dreams one has, but whatever fiction tells us, it seems to me that if the desire is to pass as one is sleeping, then plenty of us will be shooting for death during an exam in a class we haven’t attended all semester

3/10 “Right your mind for that final moment!” - I paraphrase. But you see what I mean.

And yet, its also a common thought that a good death is one that features being old, in our own bed, and passing in our sleep.

Our SLEEP.

(2/10)We like the idea of a solid Final Thought. That our last musing will be contented and happy (or at least droll).
Before an execution, many different cultures have taken a shot at even lecturing people into an honorable final thought. They will send you a priest at the hospital and scaffold alike.
