Gary Owen’s unforgettable ‘Iphigenia in Splott’ is released as a Student Edition this month from @methuendrama.bsky.social, with a fascinating intro by @lucycmmjackson.bsky.social. It’s extra special to have this play - a blistering aria against austerity on a mythic scale - as part of the series.

On Sunday, as light fades to dusk in the hallowed week of the Ides of March, the statue on the roof of the London Palladium raises her staff and summons Luna, the moon goddess, to the delight of applauding crowds across the capital. ✨👏👏✨

It’s 20 years since Howard Barker published his bracing polemic on theatre and death, and the necessity of tragedy in a culture of relentless death denial. It’s a wonderful read: taut, austere, a vision of the inexhaustible theatrical image.

Ah yes, it's 12th January. The anniversary of Samuel and Elisabeth Pepys' famed battle of the red-hot tongs (before making up and chatting in bed till late at night). Very sadly, Elizabeth died later that year, 1669, of typhoid.

Much to admire in ‘Nosferatu’: the crepuscular world of ‘medieval devilry’ in first contact with the ‘gaseous light of science’; the optics of icy monochrome ruptured by blistering intensities of flame; Nosferatu as infernal & internal, monster without & shadow within. And follow the money! 👏👏

‘Hiemal’ - of or relating to winter, wintry.

Hiemal light, a quality of clarity and stillness generated by cold; the Thames in Richmond.
