A philosopher meets a bear.

I just came across this delightful snippet from Harry Brighouse's blog Crooked Timber.

According to Google, there exist over 29 rights lawyers who are also philosophers, and they are all men.

But if you specify 'women', there's just ... Martha Nussbaum!

I only wanted 'bread'. Initially.

But then why are they there?

I asked the panel about the organisms of the deep sea - could AI ever help us understand them, given how completely 'other' they are to us?

AI without ethical constraints is dangerous. We need to change the way people think about animals, if we're to use AI technologies well. #lseevents

@birchlse.bsky.social asking if we could replace animals in scientific research with AI models instead.

"If we can understand animals better, we'll be able to relate to them better."

@birchlse.bsky.social explaining the priorities of the new Jeremy Coller Centre for Animal Sentience. I'm just so glad this work is being done - it is SO important.

This man, Jeremy Coller, is highly impressive! He describes himself as a "failed philosophy student" yet understands, and acts on, the value of funding philosophising about animal sentience. Humble, generous, and sensitive to the feelings of animals. #lseevents

Got my Pure profile set up. Apparently my most important key word is... kitchen. Yes, kitchen. 🤣🤔

I can't work out what to make of this as a promotional strategy for the Lib Dems.

Yeah I actually quite like the photo! And so much better than my attempted selfies. I am not much of a selfie-taker.

I've now started as Assistant Professor in the Ethics of Non-Violence in Birmingham's Philosophy Department. Happy to be here!

I think what I'm saying here is: The state giving recruits opportunities they lack doesn't make them having to bear the burdens of military service OK, given that the state should have fixed these inequalities already.

Peter Godfrey-Smith suggesting we should make freedom of speech policies as if from the original position - not knowing whether we'll be in the majority, whether we'll be supported by the state, etc. ... Which is like our actual situation, given how quickly the tables can turn!

We're looking at a deer, but aren't they well camouflaged?

Love that they don't run away when your predator status is disguised by being on four legs.
