Obviously, who knows if she'll behave consistently with those words going forward. But the mere fact that she apologized and acknowledged that she has played that role is not at all what I expected from her.

I would the same thing this way: she has more to confess, and she would need to demonstrate sustained repentance over quite a length of time before I would trust her, but this is more than I expected and I’d rather hear this than not.

One reason is that people who’ve fled for their lives need security and permanency to rebuild their lives. The last thing they need is unending anxiety about being sent back to what they escaped. This will cause huge stress, damage to mental health, harm to children, difficulties in integrating 3/

Above all it’s offensive that we should deliberately try to reduce the number of *successful* asylum claims. We are still a wealthy country. We welcome a (shamefully) tiny share of the world‘s refugees. It should be an honour & pleasure to welcome people who need sanctuary. Shame on Labour. /end

I'm not indifferent to the political problem here, but Labour, just as with the Conservatives, really seem to be confusing 'here's the political issue' with 'this creates an obligation on the universe to solve the problem for you in a way you'd like'.

But your actual starting point has to be 'what is the measurable progress we can actually show' and/or 'can we change opinion on this?' not 'well, it sure would be useful if the boats can be stopped!'

It is representative of a significant proportion. Why would you think otherwise? Genuinely cannot believe the people who cannot get the basic reason why people want to move to the rich world is 'to have a better and more prosperous life'!
I am not sure that "ten more years of healthy life" is representative of a significant proportion. Not to say that motivation is not valid, but does not lend to an understanding of what's happening.
The best way to understand what is actually “driving the small boats” is “if something carried a one in a 100 risk of death, would you do it it it gave you ten more years of healthy life?”

Absolutely. An iron law of whether a statement about immigrants is true is that it should also apply if you just use the word “people”. (A test that many claims on the liberal side also fail!)
It's the logical end point of the duhumanisation of asylum seekers. They're not seen as people with agency, but as problems other countries / nefarious forces are dumping on us

Immigrants are *people* ✅
Immigration is people migrating.
Asylum seekers are people trying to stay safe.
Trying to stay safe can’t be wrong.
Trying to find a better life is what people do, all of us, always have.
