The challenge is maintaining that skepticism towards things that reaffirm your biases.

Thankfully, I have too many grey hairs to find that sort of thing on Tik Tok, but I'm still a sucker for the right type of charismatic speaker.

Relevance?

The algorithm serves you a video about somethink you will probably find interesting, likely made by someone in a similar demographic to your own.

They're one of *your people* and that's a good foundation for building trust.

I like the earrings.

Consider expanding on the theme and get a Matthew Lesko suit.

The problem with a lot of systemic solutions, however, is that they don't address the acute needs.

Like, yeah, we should work towards a better society without poverty - but that offers someone really little for someone without shelter tonight. So yes. Spend the money.

It seems like there is a significant divide between those that believe solving problems means to patch acute issues vs. addressing root causes.

Idk. Maybe $20B could build enough 600-sqft tenement apartments for everyone on the streets... Maybe. Then what?

I've been saying my e-bike was 0.5 toasters, but this is a much better yardstick.

If we're going down that road, most executive compensation packages don't make sense for their companies.

Nevermind the facts, the solution, as they see it, is to cut out Ottawa. It's a narrative that is well-funded by the same people that are advancing the agenda south of the border.

Past that, there is no plan, only a list of enemies.

They think the greatest barriers to progress are imposed by Ottawa:

Can't sell oil because of pipeline regulations.

Can't sell canola because of tariffs intended to protect auto-workers in Hamilton.

Pay taxes for Quebecers' daycare and Maritime healthcare.

The list of grievances goes on...

I work with enough conservatives that I think I understand their position. I absolutely do not share it, but I get it.

If you listen to the arguments, it's the same western alienation B.S. that has been around since the 1930's: Taxes, regulation, "identity"...

If you'd like a really dumb rabbit hole to go down, there's opposition on the right over carbon capture as well. They're concerned that underground CO2 pipelines will rupture and the gas will pool, causing suffocation.

RFK Jr. made a documentary about it.

There's a hamlet in central Alberta called Usona. It was founded in the late 1800's by a bunch of assholes who wanted Canada and the US to join.

United States of North America.

Spelling is too similar. I don't like it.

Stunning is legally required unless you have a license for ritual slaughter in Canada. It's usually done with an electric bath for chickens.

Something needs to be done about the massive concentration of wealth, and as cathartic as storming the Bastille must have been, I'd be generally supportive of some other way of directing that money towards something from which everyone can benefit.

Monsters, not many I can immediately think of. Aliens - all sorts.

Fifth Element
Futurama (Leela/Fry)
Avatar
All sorts of episodes of Star Trek.

Sounds like I'm safe following 570, having only posted once.

In all fairness, if you want to block me, I won't be offended. I have very little to contribute here.

My hot take is that our model for diagnosing mental disorders is to facilitate the US insurance industry's approval of treatment.

No two brains are exactly alike, and what works for one may not work for the other, even if they have both been labeled as having ADHD.

Strong agree.

This is totally dumb.

Years ago when the moral panic du-jour was about sex robots.

I was joking with some friends and said that I would never go near them. One wrong move and it could crush your dick or kill you.

My friend, a woman, asked "how do you think women feel all the time?"
November 20, 2025 at 2:40 AM
I just found a PDF of the first.

Skimming it, it reminds me that the thing that I didn't realize when I was younger was that women have very good reasons to feel they are in danger.
