when i turned 4 this is the book my dad used to teach me to read
i remember being SO EXCITED to turn 4 years old, dunno if it was for the time with him or the actual readin' part (it was both)
now i'm a writer with my own near-full room library (of mostly non-fiction, classics, and *some* fiction)
cover of a book called "teach me to read" this book, which my dad used to teach all us kids to read when we turned 4, not only gave us one of the most important skills *for* life, but instilled a life-long love of reading. it also made the nuns hit me with their rulers because i would refuse to do first grade work because i wanted to do the second grade lessons on the board . . . fukkin nuns. amiriite? we won't discuss the yellin of "TURN THAT GODDAMNED FLASHLIGHT OFF AND GO TO SLEEP"

the face of a very contritue and quite drowsy not-so-great-pyrenees lying flat out on the big comfy bed after opening the nightstand drawer, then fishin out, opening and eating an entire jar of 56 melatonin gummies and a bag of solidified powdered honey of which the remnents are now a sticky nasty mess on the carpet. i guess the bright side, if you can call it that, is the gummies din't have any ingredients to cause him acute harm and that he's gonna be a RILLY GOOD BOY (read drowsy and unlikely to get into any more shit) for at least the next two days? also pretty happy that i finally invested in my very own personal carpet cleaner . . .

this is Heimdallr. he and Endeavor came together from a shelter that was reluctant to adopt two adult cats at the same time during kitten season. a copy of the house title, glowing recommendations from a long-time vet, and the fact that they (for the time being would be) the only two animals IN the home did not sway them. it took threatening to not adopt either of them, and something about needing police removal, for them to realize it was in their best interest to just give up the damn cats. Heimdallr is affectionately now referred to as "Heim-twenty" because he is an absolute chunk and is significantly larger than a "Heim-dollar" this is Endeavor. he is your classic orange. afraid of his own shadow, but not afraid of the dogs. his favorite thing in the world is to sit on the edge of the couch behind you and head butt you over and over. and over. his second favorite thing in the world is to demand you scritch his belleh. preferably until your hand falls off. he is also extremely handsome. Cully-Kitten. the latest addition to the duchy of choo, she was born to a wild mama at the stables, but clearly had designs to live the pampered life of a tiny house kitten, and picked the weakest human to enact her plot on. she is completely in love with her Heimdallr, and enjoys elephant bowling all night long with Daphnis. she is also a most excellant mouser. DustyMan came to the duchy at 16 years of age due to his human dying. he was a diabetic, and the humans daughter traveled too much for work and could not administer the twice daily doses of insulin that kept Dusty alive, the doctor knew all it would take was one look . . . Dusty recently crossed the rainbow bridge at 21 years of age. not bad for a diabetic cat, eh? he loved to lay in the sunshine and did not care that this required someone to be out with him at all times. a fuckup by an (different) emergency vet left him, in his last years of life, with a permanent tilt, which combined with his age made him significantly slower, so there was not much danger in him running off. his crossing is what opened the spot needing filled.

about half of all my critters have come from shelters, ~25% from rescue, ~25% dropped on me by the universe
