They can. I had a business(LLC) that I closed and couldn't get an agreement with IRS to settle taxes. They went in and emptied all of my accounts. Even ones that I never used with them.

My paranoia comes from being a previous business owner(LLC), who had to close and couldn't reach an agreement with the IRS on paying taxes. They emptied my personal accounts. This breach scares me because they have the ability to empty anyone's account if they do have control over those systems.

At this point, I'm concerned about how safe it is to even file taxes.

On further thought, what's even more scary is the ability of the government to freeze all accounts and/or withdraw all of your funds without consent. Nobody is protected from this blatant breach.
