In 2021,% of NEA trade w/🇨🇳comparable to SEA, but value of NEA trade w/🇨🇳>SEA trade w/🇨🇳by a large margin.🇯🇵ran a small deficit w/🇨🇳,🇰🇷&🇹🇼had surpluses.🇧🇳&🇱🇦had surpluses w/🇨🇳,🇲🇲a v small one. Other SEA states had deficits.

Note also that FDI from🇺🇸🇪🇺🇯🇵individually>FDI from🇨🇳. Latter just above🇰🇷.🇺🇸🇪🇺🇯🇵🇰🇷FDI go to prosaic factories&offices that create jobs, but not so much sexy&tangible infrastructure like high speed rail, ports&airports.

Here are some interesting figures from the compendium.🇨🇳is ASEAN’s largest trading partner in goods by value, but ASEAN runs a chronic deficit w/🇨🇳&a chronic surplus w/🇺🇸🇪🇺&w/in ASEAN. Situation is okay so long as🇺🇸🇪🇺&ASEAN markets keep buying ASEAN exports. All from official ASEAN stats.
