Liga MX has 4 or 5 really good teams, but the rest of the league is worse than the worst MLS team. It’s apples and oranges.

Two things:
1. Owners wanted teams qualifying for the playoffs to at least get a home game.
2. Having home/away series proved too unpredictable given MLS’ parity, so having a one-off game after the first round was deemed a better reward for higher seeded teams.
