A great day at the UK National Archives, Kew, for the Pipe Roll Society AGM and Council. It’s such an honour to serve on this society, which does so much to facilitate medieval research and accessibility to original documents.

Poppies pouring in through Traitors’ Gate, beneath St Thomas’s Tower, at sunset 🌅

We also met Poppy, one of the Tower’s resident ravens, named for the original 2014 installation. I had met Poppy once before, in February during a visit with students, but it was nice to be formally introduced 🐦‍⬛

An evening with lovely people at the Tower of London. Endless thanks to @ravenology.bsky.social for hosting, showing us round and telling the best tales, and to @drlindseyfitz.bsky.social for bringing us all together.

An incredible night at the Tower of London, hosted by the wonderful @ravenology.bsky.social 🐦‍⬛

I’ve never seen the Tower like this: peaceful, dusky light. We saw the ancient Key Ceremony, then spent the night at Yeoman Warder’s pub, The Keys. Thanks
@drlindseyfitz.bsky.social for organising! 🏰 🍻

Watch the ever-engaging @helencarr.bsky.social explore the reign of Edward II, addressing the question: was he England’s worst king? From @history-hit.bsky.social, featuring Paul Dryburgh, Kathryn Warner and yours truly, at some fav medieval locations. www.historyhit.com/edward-ii-en...

Another fantastic day with the #ProjectingMajesty team. This time at the National Archives, examining fourteenth century Great Wardrobe Accounts.

I’d meant to take lots of photos of the team and the documents, but I was too engrossed in the accounts and discussions about Richard II’s clothes!

Success in academia often has more to do with luck, patronage and the job market than “hard work”.
Good academics acknowledge this.
I worked hard, but I was in the right place at the right time on occasion. Historians far more talented than I have fallen between the cracks.

A fab opportunity for #MedievalHistory students interested in the Medieval March and the Mortimer family. The Mortimer History Society have opened applications for their 2025 Student Bursary: 2 awards of £1,000!

Two paintings; two mysteries.

Who painted them? When? Where did they originally hang/stand? Have they been tampered with? Did Richard II have a beard? Why 11 angels? Perhaps the biggest mystery of all: WHY 10 MUSHROOMS? 🍄

We will attempt to answer all these questions and more! #ProjectingMajesty

What a day! The #ProjectingMajesty Team @northeasternu.bsky.social (NU - London) visited @westminsterabbey.bsky.social and The National Gallery to view the portraits of Richard II. It was fascinating to consider the Westminster portrait and Wilton Diptych together as an interdisciplinary team.

Delighted to share that Pasold have awarded me a research activity grant to fund the next stage of my research on the Great Wardrobe Accounts. I can’t wait to explore some wonderful textile and dress content in these documents.
Thanks @pasoldresearchfund.bsky.social (now on Bluesky - follow them!)

In 2008 this incredible medieval wallpainting of St George slaying the Dragon was discovered at St Cadoc’s church, Llancarfan, Wales. Likely 15th century, the vivid mural was painstakingly uncovered from under c20 layers of lime wash in 2013.

Feeling excited for @lusignanmermaid.bsky.social in Chicago ahead of Medieval Congress at Kalamazoo and remembering our fabulous trip 6 years ago! Here we are visiting Cloud Gate (aka the Bean) in May 2019.

Missing my best conference buddy and wishing her a wonderful K’zoo!

Absolutely! I was confused as to why a Benedictine Priory looked like a fortification, although in a tough to defend location!

Inspired by @barbdrummond.bsky.social #TilesOnTuesday post yday, here are two of my favourite photos from the interior of Ewenny Priory.
The light inside this building is incredible. I could instantly see why Turner painted it during his 1795 visit to S Wales.
Look at those columns and arches!

Deep in conversation about Isabella of France with @helencarr.bsky.social 👑❤️

I had a blast filming for @history-hit.bsky.social last week. Can’t wait to see the finished show

I had such a wonderful time at St Bart’s yesterday - the best time talking Isabella of France with @helencarr.bsky.social. It truly did not feel like work!

Very excited to be at the church of St Bartholomew the Great today!

I haven’t been here in over 2 years, when I came with @deegonz92.bsky.social to see a fabulous #Medieval Mummers play at Christmas 2022.

There are also around 200 black plaques around the city, marking the homes of those who perished. This one is a stone’s throw from my house and commemorates Edward Stroud, a steward abroad the Titanic.

A city councillor funded the project back in 2018:

There are sadly a great many. Here’s one example: the grave of William Alfred Jeffery who died on the disaster aged 28: 113 years ago today. You can see the blue stake at the top.

His parents erected this tribute.

The graves are now maintained by the Friends of Southampton Old Cemetery.
