I imagine there’s lots of people coming off X about now and Bluesky is the obvious alternative (since it’s basically what Twitter used to be). I’ve been here for a while but finally deactivated my X account yesterday. It seems to be basically Pornhub with shouting now…

It works when the alternatives make driving the slow and expensive option. In London, tube/bus/walking are often cheaper than car ownership. In Bristol, I walk - for exercise - or get the bus (locally) and train (nationally) when it’s faster and cheaper. But I drive when public transport’s too slow.

Do we most remember what we keep using? That’s my assumption. Also, sometimes we think we don’t remember but we do. I’m in a choir and we recently performed something we last did in the summer. Thought I’d forgotten it all - but it just came back at rehearsal (didn’t need words or music).

None of the young men I know, as a parent.

Not only hard work but expensive. My childfree friends are retiring early - but I’ve still got at least seven years of supporting them at uni to go…

Free childcare but also more affordable housing, lower cost of student loans (since current students are future potential parents). These would be a start. No one with a choice will voluntarily impoverish themselves to provide new taxpayers (which is all policymakers actually want - not real kids).

Paella! Sounds good!

It was an easier case to make before our kids faced coming out of university owing £45k+ in student loans. If you go to university, it has to be both interesting in itself and give you the skills (eg research/writing/critical thinking) for meaningful work in future.

I just had this conversation with my daughter (14) this weekend. She volunteered that she wouldn’t use AI to do her homework because she thought her answers were better than AI. But she also said lots of her friends are using it…

AI is the revenge of the nerds - on everyone who got to do something interesting for a living.

It would be for an ECT on a standard timetable. Otherwise, would just be good to hear your and Amy’s thoughts on workload/time saving hacks. Thanks Adam!

Enjoying the podcast! What tips/hacks do you have for new teachers on managing workload? Is 8am to 5/6pm achievable/sustainable as a working day?

I can imagine there’s a certain English language-speaking appeal!

Oh, and congratulations!

Yes, the big changes will come later this year - when they leave sixth form. But, yes, me as the parent of an adult is a moment… My mum was the parent of an adult at 39. I’ve managed to delay ‘supermaturity’ (?) beyond that!

Ah, happened to us two weeks ago. Nothing has really changed though…

Tax writeoff?

Year 9 daughter first said she didn’t care (she’s 13!). When I pointed out AI would be learning online she said: No - online’s boring. There’s no social interaction.

Ah, but you can listen to podcasts while running. Not sure I could do it without…

Very true. I hear one local magazine publisher is now in the hands of people who think their main business is to produce presentations rather than actual magazines.

Basically this is what happens when you put sales in charge. It used to be very different when editors were in control.

But they do see ads. YouTube etc are full of them. They see more adds than TV viewers do.

I was rubbish at maths at school - this wouldn’t have helped me. I’d have wanted to see it written down and explained step by step. And then I’d want the tutor to stick around while I had a go on a couple of questions. Not just dismiss my pain!
