Native grasses grow beneath the trees - between the fruit, grass seeds, insects + mistletoe berries the whole place is a banquet for the birds right through into the coldest, darkest months of the year.

In the old orchard at Cotehele #Cornwall mistletoe grows in the branches of apple trees adorned with a rich array of lichens + moss so that as well as all the moths + insects that use apple trees as a larval food plant, it's also supporting the many species who feed on lichens, moss + mistletoe.

11th or 12th Century wall painting uncovered hidden under whitewash a few years back at the tiny church of St John the Baptist in Clayton, West Sussex. The painters are thought to have been based at Lewes Priory + to have lived at some point in Southern Europe based on the style of clothes painted.

All of which, suggests a lot of cultural mixing + mingling in this little corner of Devon. Perhaps, before the founding of Buckland Abbey + the monastery at Tavistock, there were already religious centres in the area? Or perhaps people were just moving around + mixing for work? For fun?

The third stone was discovered being used as a kerbstone in Tavistock, inscribed in Latin “(The stone) of Nepranus, son of Conbevus.” Nepranus has a Latinised name, while his father’s name, Conbevus, is Celtic.
