This is a great example of how details can end up being altered during the copying process; Katharine's retroussé nose is straightened, & her rounded chin made more angular.

The panel originally formed part of the decorations of the Great Hall at Halnaker House in Sussex.

By September, Badoer was reporting on Fernando II’s anger that plans to marry one of the two Marías to Giuliano, the ruler of Florence & brother of Pope Leo X, had fallen through. Both Marías returned to their lives as nuns, with María Esperanza later becoming an abbess.

In August 1513, the Venetian ambassador to Spain, Zuan Badoer, reported how Fernando II had taken María Esperanza & María Blanca, two of his illegitimate daughters, from the Monasterio de Nuestra Señora de Gracia convent to marry them off, in opposition to the Marías own desires.

I love the contrast in expressions between Holbein’s sketch & portrait of Mary, Lady Guildford. In the sketch, Holbein captures a smile, while the portrait depicts a somber expression. I think it speaks to the intimacy of Holbein’s sketches vs. the grandeur of his portraits.

The recent Six Wives exhibit at the National Gallery in London included a partial image of the stained glass window depicting Katharine of Aragon at the Vyne Chapel in Hampshire; possibly designed by Bernard van Orley, c.1522-30. Katharine’s sleeve is decorated with her symbol, a pomegranate.
