The Bow Tie Quilt was the 7th to be displayed on the fence to direct the slaves to dress in a formal manner so they wouldn’t stand out among city folk. They could walk through town undetected to ships heading across the Great Lakes to Canada and freedom.

The Shoo-Fly block represents an actual person who might have helped escaping slaves. His responsibility was to secretly aid and harbour fugitives.

This is the fifth block in the Underground Railroad sampler quilt. It’s called the log cabin. The quilt may have indicated a specific log cabin that was a safe house or directed runways to build a cabin to weather out winter and establish permanent residency in a free area.

This is a sample of the crossroads quilt block, 4th in the series. The main crossroads or terminal was Cleveland, Ohio. 4 or 5 overland trails and numerous water routes crossed Lake Erie into Canada and freedom.

I thought I had better get on track with this quilt block. The 6” and 12” block of carpenters wheel finally finished except ironing. Ran out of the light blue so had to find a replacement. Swing low sweet chariot.
