I've missed Sydney. Currently people-watching in a cafe, listening to two bros describing themselves as "powerbrokers" and laughing just that bit too loud.
Always worth coming here to make yourself glad you don't live here.

So, that's another day gone without accidentally performing a Nazi salute. One day at a time my friends.

So Instagram has now started blocking left wing hashtags. This is the worst fucking timeline.

#TTRPGs
How did you get into RPGs and when?
For me it was early 80s. I was reading Fighting Fantasy books and a friend had other friends who liked them, and introduced us. They also had the Basic D&D set and it went from there. How about you?

Mutants and Masterminds
I'm not usually a fan of generic superhero RPGs but this one had a good setting and great ideas. Abstracting powers and effects was a good idea, but d20 was just wrong. I know it was the fashion at the time but d20 just doesn't work.

Mage
Part of the World of Darkness, it had a strong setting and system, but what ultimately failed it was the pretension to being Philosophy: the RPG. It just took itself too seriously, so I'd recommend playing if you put the Philosophy 101 to the side

Shadowrun
A unique blend of fantasy and cyberpunk. The setting is wonderful and fun. It has an aesthetic like no other. But frankly, the mechanics suck. Inconsistent and illogical. Each edition had different problems. Maybe a complete rule overhaul would work?

Sorcerer
Intense and occult focused, the mechanics superbly fit the game. Well thought out and well written. But it supports a single story and pretty much a single play style. Great for what it is, but the most focused game I have ever played.

Blue Planet
One of the most original settings I've ever played in, a planet almost completely covered in water run by execs. Themes of eco-terrorism, exploration, potentially horror. But very hard to actually run an adventure in. Well worth reading.

Ars Magica
I love this game. The magic system is unique, character creation was fun, the long-term goal setting and progression was great. But the fact of the matter is you spend more time playing as a companion than a magus. Kind of misses the point.

#TTRPGs that were almost great day 4/10.
Paranoia
Satirical rpg set in a future where a mad computer rules the world. Silly and fun, a dystopian comedy. The setting is great, the game play is fun, but it can't sustain more than a few sessions before the joke wears off. Great fun for a once-off.

#TTRPGs that were almost great day 3/10.
D&D 5e
Works really well for high fantasy for levels 5-9 and streamlined mechanics work for speed of combat. But low level and high level play is just broken. So much work needed by the GM to balance encounters on the fly. Boring character advancement.

Beat to Quarters.
Wonderful card based mechanics. Great way to simulate a command structure and have everyone involved. But the Venn diagram of RPGers and Napoleonic fans is vanishingly small. Finding people to play was an exercise in futility unfortunately.

MERP
The art, presentation, lore were all top notch. Critical tables were the best. But it completely failed with a magic system designed for a completely different world. My group effectively banned any magic users and had fun as a zero magic party.

Interesting. I have been on Bluesky for 10 days, posting about TTRPGs. Now getting followed by porn accounts. Not an issue I thought I'd have.

RPGs that aren't D&D Day 10/10
Kids in Bikes
ET, Stranger Things, It. Think of the 80s movies where kids discover something strange or other-wordly and adventure ensues. Really evocative of that kind of movie and great fun to play. Very, very different to D&D. #TTRPG

RPGs that aren't D&D Day 9/10.
Blades in the Dark
Run heists and robberies in a dark fantasy world, build your crew to be a major criminal gang for good or ill. Deceptively simple d6 mechanic but the rules focus on creative and later thinking. Very different from D&D but thoroughly rewarding.#TTRPG

RPGs that aren't D&D Day 8/10.
Vampire
A game of personal horror. Play as an immortal vampire in modern day. Politics and power, embrace your inner monster or strive to atone for your evil.
Encourages character development and exploration of morality, what it means to be human. Not for kids

RPGs that aren't D&D Day 7/10.
Traveller
Travel the stars, explore uncharted regions of space, space opera of the best kind.
One of the first RPGs to introduce random life path character creation, this system supports many play styles from hard edged SF to light space opera. Give it a try.

RPGs that aren't D&D day 6/10.
Cyberpunk
Inspired by the likes of Bladerunner and William Gibson's books, futuristic dystopia has players acting as freelance black ops against megacorps, crime gangs.
Stylish and evocative, the strong setting should help players adapt fairly easily.

Glad to see Peter Dutton is focusing on the important things. Inflation? No. Cost of living? No. Climate change? No. Geopolitical issues? No. Which flags he wants to have behind him if he becomes PM. That's the one. Nobel Peace Prize right there.
Is it racist? Yep. Fucking Muppet.
