It's absolutely not the first time I've seen the SUSMP gamed for commercial advantage. Back around 2001-2002 a commercial entity decided it was slighted by a competitor, filing an unnecessary import application with the TGA for biological material that was legal and available within Australia

Hell yes. There is deffo a high rate of spivvery unsupported by the actual work, lots of 'cult of personality' and bro-science promotion where evidence and datasets are unsupported and unquestioned

But I definitely did not sign up for the exploitative colonial corporadelic shitshow happening around the therapeutics and extractives industry. Quite the opposite- the work we started was exactly supposed to subvert that paradigm. Late stage capitalism will eat your dreams

I've even been pleasantly surprised by the environment in two of my recent roles ( SME organic cannabis )- it's been less toxic than some of my recent community engagements. I know this isn't true for everyone in industry, but that doesn't invalidate my current experience

idk, I signed up for research almost 3 decades ago, there's an element of capitalism even then because those are the waters we swim in. Who else is gunna send me kit and consumables, how else should I be reimbursed for my time?
