Every time I go away, my brain revives the VinVeld+Tseng brain worms. I know this snippet was posted back on the bird app, just bringing it back here to tickle some brains again.

It's the second time I've platinum'd this game and both times I've been ridiculously proud of the achievement. What an incredible game. I realise I'm putting off DS2 because I'm afraid it won't be half as good as the original.

Snippet of fic: But he knows better now. He knows not to be ashamed of the screams that are pulled from his throat, that crack when he thinks he can't scream any more and yet, and yet. He knows not to be ashamed of the whimpers that fall from his lips when the screaming stops, when the shocks stop but the electricity remains, causing the fingers on his right hand, his only hand, to twitch spasmodically. He knows what it is to grit his teeth and never give up, knows better than anyone alive, because he can do this all goddamn day too. Lord knows he already has done. He knows the spark in the blue of his eyes when determination takes over, has spent enough time staring himself down, growling trigger words into a mirror just to train himself out of flinching. Surrender isn't in his vocabulary. That's why when the machine stops, when the screaming stops, when all that is left are the smells of burning and fear, his breath catches. The Bucky in front of him, no longer soldier but not yet Soldier, slumps, deadweight, only the straps of the chair holding him up. His chest, emaciated, bruised, rises and falls rapidly, automatically (and Bucky knows it's automatic because he vividly remembers wishing he wasn't breathing at all). For the longest time this is the only movement he sees, the only indication Hydra hadn't finally, mercifully, pushed him too far, and he finds himself frozen on the spot, not remembering what's meant to happen next. He nearly misses it at first, the soldier slumped so low as he is, but his bitten, cracked lips begin to twitch, seemingly random at first but then with a slow, juddering cadence. Whatever was left of his voice was spent on screaming, but Bucky knows the shapes his bloodied mouth is trying to make. He knows this is a memory, this is a cruel game, and he knows nothing can change what happened here. But he was so young, and he was broken, and he knows what happens but he doesn't remember, not really, and he can't squash down the part of him that thinks maybe he could help, maybe he ... He steps forward on shaky legs, and murmurs under his breath the words he can see himself trying to say. Three, two, five, five, he murmurs, willing the man in front of him to keep repeating them too, to hold onto them like he used to in Azzano. It had worked then. Seven, zero, three, eight, he says, low, just like how he used to tell Steve to copy his breathing when they were kids at home. Breathe with me, Stevie. Three, two, five, five, kid. The hammering heartbeat and disguised desperation are unchanged even now, nine decades later. He inches closer, seven zero three eight, he whispers, three two five five on loop, and he is close enough to reach out now, to touch, but he doesn't. Barnes, James Buchanan, he mouths, Sergeant, three two five five... but he lets his own voice trail into silence. He watches as the soldier's lips still, not even forming their broken shapes anymore, not even trembling, and it finally dawns on him what he is witnessing. Seven... zero... three... eight... he whispers. But he knows now what this is. He's spoken about the loneliness before, the solitude, the abandonment he felt when he was left to die, discussed it for countless hours in therapy like they'd ever understand. He's spoken about the pain before in therapy too, and to Sam - not to Steve though, never to Steve. But here he sees in the soldier's eyes, his eyes, bloodshot, broken, lifeless, something that he's never spoken about to any of them. He remembers now. This is the moment he stopped fighting. This is the moment he finally ... gave ... up. ~¤~

"Listen ..." Tseng doesn't look up but does tilt his head slightly, the tiny movement enough to let Reno know he is with him. "... did Veld make you feel safe?" Tseng blinks, the question unexpected and entirely without context. He plays along though, doesn't pry, and eventually responds. "Yes," he says, a brief pause to think about it but sure in his answer. "Did he ever hurt you?" Equally unexpected. Equally sure. "Sometimes," Fic snippet continued. *** Intentionally. Unintentionally. Unknowingly. Reno raises an eyebrow and purses his lips, and scoffs bitterly. "Guess that tracks. Can't trust someone to protect you if they can't hurt you too, right?" Tseng keeps his eyes fixed on Reno, who has yet to look up. He doesn't know what has prompted this dialogue, or what exactly Reno wants out of it, but he files it away in his mind for future reference nonetheless. "I can't say I agree," he says eventually. He knows Reno’s history, knows more about him than Reno knows he knows. He knows about his family, about the people who have taken care of him in the past, and the way his trust in people has been paid back warped and decayed, time and time again. He made a quiet commitment to himself, when Veld left, to never become one of those people. ***
