I guess you are using a laptop? If you run out of ideas for your Mac solution and you have an iPad you can use the Teleprompter app. It works for me. You can also attach a keyboard and get start/stop/reset functionality.

Seems like a teachable moment. Had they scheduled a convening with a little person actors guild or other relevant organization prior to production they could have cited this as a reason for their decision. I'm guessing they didn't do this.
