Hello new people! Though I am a philosopher by trade and training, I will post about anything I find interesting. So I may also post about, in no particular order: 🇵🇭 news, history, trivia, my fandom/s, being a late diagnosed ADHDer, parenthood, teaching, and adventures in Metro Manila commuting.
Araw ng Kagitingan 🧵

Kahapon, sabi ng anak ko, "nanay, the Doomsday Clock moved closer to midnight. Does that mean we're near the end of the world? I'm scared."
Nagtaka ako--saan niya yun narinig? Kaya nag basa-basa ako. /1

DDS: "wala ba kayong awa sa matanda at may sakit na Tatay Digong? Pero may rights ang mga kriminal?"
Ibabalik ko sa inyo: wala ba kayong awa sa 122 na bata, mula 1-17 years old, na pinatay? Adik ba yung bata na 20 months old? Kriminal yung 7 years old?
Pantay ang halaga ng buhay nating lahat.

Lavin draws a really important throughline between corporal punishment and the wider right wing project in this book, in a way not many people are talking about. Isolating children into evangelical homeschooling and crunchy off-grid homesteading primes them for abuse.

Get the book! It’s very good!
just a reminder that despite somewhat dismal sales numbers, people who've read my book said they found it important and clarifying, and emotionally resonant, and thoughtful, and well-written. and i hope you'll consider buying it as we move into the era it describes:

We were all required to take basic psychology and basic sociology as undergrads in my college. That came in handy for so much: teaching, parenting, navigating different social norms across cultures, self-understanding. Plus my current research has a lot of overlap with sociology.
