Caveat on the supposedly "new" alphabetic discovery--it seems to be 20 or so years old--Schwartz first published this in 2010 (see bibliography below) and AFAIK nobody has shown that these signs form words in any language. I raised some questions with him at the time that haven't been answered.

It should also be noted that the discovery in western Syria at Tell Umm-el Marra moves the discussion of the place of invention northward away from an Egyptian context, as the previous evidence had suggested.
