Who's "them"?
I read a study about fans of sports teams. When the teams win, the fans tend to say, "*We* won!" When the teams lose, the fans say, "*They* lost." To all the people who vote Democratic and are now blaming "the Dems" for the Trump shitshow, remember, WE ARE THE DEMS. Before you holler to burn down the party (or "clean house," etc.), perhaps ask yourself what you've done to build the party. Have you volunteered, met with / communicated with your reps, let them know what policies you prefer? Actively supported good candidates? Showed up to get out the vote? Gone to legislative action days? Worked with your local party organizations or unions? Donated more than token amounts? Even small efforts matter. If you've just opined on social media and are now blaming "them" instead of organizing to oppose the autocratic takeover of the US, please consider whether criticizing "the Dems" for being complacent might be a bit of projection.

Regarding "soft-pedal" (vs. "soft peddle"):
Dictionary entry: soft-pedal: "to tone down," 1915, figurative use from the noun soft pedal (1856) in reference to the left foot-lever of a piano, which among other effects makes it quieter; from soft (adj.) + pedal (n.).

It's not the effects of inflation, per the article, but the *perception* of inflation's effects. That's a VERY different thing.
