You make a good point. I tend to overtune encounters as well. And yeah if it seems like they are going to have a hard time, I remove some monsters or as you said, ignore some of the more powerful features I gave to the monsters.

Just did this with my group. Had several ogres and a hobgoblin offer to help take out the rest of their comrades for "some" of the treasure that was being stored and for freedom to leave the camp.

The treasure was filled with a boat load of gold.

Not my absolute fav, but still super strong. Serpent Scale Armor. For an uncommon AC of 14 + full dexterity is powerful.

IMO, the spells might exist, but they don't function how they should or how I'd like. So I create either a new spell or modify the current version.
