The water lapped against the dock below them. Claude was tempted to let the peace wash over them for a while longer, but there were things he needed to know. “Did you have any idea,” he asked, “that Dimitri was still alive?” Ashe chewed on his lip and hugged one leg tight to his chest. “They announced his execution years ago, but there was a rumor that he escaped. If any soldiers—those under Dukedom command, I mean—if anyone tried to look into it further, they were sent away.” Claude raised his eyebrows. “I’m guessing you never saw any of them again.” Another shake of his head. “But we always wondered. Why some of the noble houses held onto resistance so long.” Ashe trailed off. He knew more than he was letting on, Claude surmised. He decided not to press further. “For what it’s worth, I’m sorry. If there’s anything I can do…” Ashe’s eyes, luminous against the twilight, met Claude’s own. “Let me come with you this time. I want to help.” Claude’s heart seized, and he hesitated. “Trust me, you’re much more helpful here. I’ll just be hopping around working my charm in front of different old geezers who can’t see past their own borders.” He gave a rueful smile. “But you can be sure Judith will keep me in line.” Ashe smiled weakly in return, masking his disappointment. Claude suspected the offer was more a matter of running from his grief than any true desire to go. They eventually made their way back to the feast, trading the quiet solitude of the pond for the noisy distraction of company. Long after seeing the last knights off to the barracks to sleep away the drink, Claude stayed awake thinking of alliances, war, the rise and fall of nations and borders. And inevitably of green eyes in the moonlight. Something still churned in his stomach, and it wasn’t the drink. He couldn’t shake the unease he’d felt at the edge of the pier, how quickly he’d wanted to reach out and banish all the pain swirling in those eyes. It wasn’t part of any of his plans.

An excerpt from the post author’s work in progress which contains the following text: “Listen, Ashe,” he began, taking a deep breath. But he cut off as he turned around. Ashe had untucked his shirt (one of the extras from the healers’ supplies) and unfastened what few buttons there were in order to examine his bandaged side. He glanced up briefly at Claude as he unwound the clean wrap. Claude’s eyes flicked over Ashe’s bare skin, torn between wanting to offer help and wanting to run away. He could already feel that pull within, like his blood was trying to breach the surface of his body. His mouth went dry, and he blinked to shake himself out of it. What was it with Ashe always taking his shirt off when Claude needed to say something?

Resurrecting my dimilix WIP for this week's #WIPWednesday. Despite having one foot in the metaphorical WIP graveyard, this fic refuses to die, which I respect as being very on brand for dimilix lol
Screenshot contains the following text from one of my WIPs: Tears spring to Felix’s eyes—stupid, stupid tears—but he holds them back. He wishes his voice were deeper like Glenn’s. “But I want to go with Glenn! Please let me go, I want to be with Dimitri!” Felix doesn’t care about the other advisors present, or his friends for that matter. He only sees Glenn, a man at seventeen, a knight, allowed to go where Felix is not. Leaving Felix behind again. And worse, this time Dimitri is, too. “My answer is final. And you will comport yourself well in front of the king and council, Felix.” Felix clamps his mouth shut. He sits back in his seat and tries to appear grown up, responsible, in the right. He can feel Dimitri looking at him, but he doesn’t move. He doesn’t want to see Dimitri’s pity right now. King Lambert glances between father and son with some amusement, hand at his chin. “Oh, come now Rodrigue, it might be good for the boy to travel some. Get a taste of what’s in store for him down the line.” Felix’s heart races, but the look on his father’s face dashes all hopes. Rodrigue’s hands are clenched at the table’s edge, brows furrowed, posture ever erect. The face Felix sees when his father longs to argue with the king but dares not. “Your Majesty, surely you will permit me authority over my own son. He is not yet in your service.” Lambert waves a hand. “So be it, then. The company is settled. Well now, Dimitri, you will have at least one friend among us. Are you not excited?” “I-I...” Dimitri, who has not spoken a word yet at this meeting, stutters. His eyes dart from Glenn on the floor, along the table to Felix, who pouts and turns his face away. “Yes, of course, Father. I am thrilled.” They leave two days later. Felix climbs the tower at the gate to watch. The last he sees of his brother, after he dons his helmet, is a spot of silver glinting in the setting sunlight, in step with a sea of knights trailing behind the carriage of the royal family.

Last #WIPWednesday before I start posting this fic on Friday! 🙈🙈🙈 this is from one of my favorite chapters too
Image is an excerpt from a work in progress. Text is as follows: As if on cue, he heard the library door open. Ashe entered, carrying a feather duster and some rags. He paused briefly to look around the vacant lower level, peering at a few of the closest shelves and dragging a finger across the spotless surface of a nearby table. “Huh,” he said, nonplussed. Claude bit back a smile. Ashe continued up the stairs and around to the far corner, where the head librarian always bade them begin cleaning, right where Claude had set up his little table. Claude pretended to be absorbed in his book again. “Claude?” He glanced up, grinning at Ashe’s puzzled expression. Candlelight glinted through strands of silver hair falling across Ashe’s forehead. “Fancy meeting you here,” Claude said. He removed his feet from the opposite chair and sat up. “Care for some tea?” If possible, Ashe’s eyebrows shot up even higher. “What are you doing up here?” Claude began pouring into the two awaiting teacups, pursing his lips at the lack of steam. Indulging, he could have said. He wanted Ashe’s time, Ashe’s attention. Constant presence in Ashe’s mind. To make sure Ashe wasn’t cracking under the strain of everything. “Can’t a man enjoy an evening of peace and quiet in the library?” he said. Soft footsteps pattered toward him, until Ashe’s shadow fell over the table. “Well, sure, I suppose. Seems like a pretty specific corner for that.” Claude shrugged by way of admission. “Like you said, I know where to find you.”

hello #WIPWednesday, here we are with the golden deer on the way to Enbarr. This is more or less where I've left off and now I have to write a huge climatic fight scene 🫠
Excerpt from a work in progress, with text as follows: Though Garland Moon was almost at an end, the rainy season still stretched out long before them. The march toward Enbarr, a long and waterlogged journey, had begun in earnest the previous week. Mud-squelched footsteps smothered the sodden ground as troops came and went past Claude’s tent, which smelled of damp no matter how much incense he lit. Their encampment abutted the ruins of Merceus, to take advantage of what little shelter it afforded from the southern winds, despite much of the walls being reduced to piles of gravel. It had been impossible not to notice the enormous craters on their approach as the road sloped gently downward, as if some giant had scooped out the innards of the fort and spilled the guts carelessly over the town. Memories of what transpired, that impossible magic, hung like ghosts in the evening fog, which did nothing to help the army’s morale. They were lucky the Empire had deigned to retrieve their dead. Byleth had been adamant that they camp along the northern edge of the city, just inside its walls, in order to leave the people undisturbed. Raphael, in contrast, had wanted to provide rations to the affected townspeople, and Marianne had offered to heal their wounded, leading to a fierce argument among the council about whether their resources were stretched too thin or not. In the end, it was decided that they would leave two wagons of extra supplies at the town gates as they passed through.

Claude: generational wealth, in my family? More likely than you think

The Aquatic Capital had played host to the bickering of elite nobles since the formation of the Alliance, thanks to the prominence of House Riegan, and she took it well in stride, her denizens leaching as much extra gold from wealthy pockets as they could while displaying the best the region had to offer. It made for a convenient cycle, feeding money into his family’s treasury, which then strengthened its influence as head of the Alliance and brought more business back to Derdriu as a result. Claude was not one to let the family name—and all that came with it—go to waste when he could put it to good use.

No timeskip fic for me today, but please enjoy this #WIPWednesday snippet of Claude returning to Garreg Mach after politicking in the Alliance:
The tall, vine-covered stone of the Goddess Tower always caught his eye first when traveling by wyvern, its square top peeking over the cathedral shell with its crumbling spire as the eastern peaks of the Oghmas gave way. Garreg Mach seemed almost outside of time, both alive and a ruin at once. A skeleton looming within the mountains, with curls of warm smoke rising between the bones. Full of secrets as it was, the monastery still made a welcome sight to Claude’s wind-bitten eyes, especially after a month away, and he looked forward to the rest it offered. In a few short days, they would depart again for Myrddin and march onward to Fort Merceus the impregnable.

Text from the work in progress reads as follows: When Claude was ten years old, he watched his father punish one of his generals, a man who’d taken unnecessary risks for personal glory and caused disorder because of it. He was stripped naked and left in the middle of the desert to find his way home without a map. ‘He thinks his plans are better than mine,’ Claude’s father had said. ‘Let us see for ourselves.’ Then he’d laughed as if it were all a big joke. Claude never forgot the way the general had groveled as they flew away. The boy in front of him would never stoop so low. He would stand his ground, defend his choices to the last. Even the wrong ones. Claude exhaled, his anger deflating. “I don’t ever want to hear you say that my life is worth a shred more than yours,” he said. “Plus, if our places had been reversed…” Claude shoved a hand through his hair. “I don’t know what I would have done. Lately, I’ve been a wreck when it comes to you.”
