The paradigmatic business geniuses in the popular mind of the time were people like Lee Iacocca and Jack Welch. I don’t think people really put Trump in the same category? He was perceived as more of a Hollywood guy as far as I can recall.

As I remember, he was mostly seen as an entertainment figure, kind of a joke—in the same category as Howard Stern or Vince McMahon.
