Decided to make a quick little post about "Hey" DMs

There are only so many times I can put up with it before it stresses me out, so I don't reply to them anymore, and here's why:

Please state your business (1/3)

An unsolicated "hey" message tells nothing to the artist/creator what you want and are often ignored

It's kind of annoying to force the other party to fish the question out of your when YOU initiated the conversation

Messages with no context will get ignored. This goes for the following and anything similar:

"Hey", ""Hello", "Hi"
"How are you?"
"Can I ask you something/a question?"
"You got a minute/a sec?"
"Can we chat?"

Most hello messages turn out to be bots, scammers, creeps, or people who want idle chit-chat in DMs. Creators are often stressed out after replying to an empty "hey" because we don't know what's coming next. So we choose to ignore such openers.

Please State Your business (2/3)
Don't do this

Mock conversation:
Client: Hey
Artist: Hi
Client: How are you?
Artist: I'm good
Client: Can I ask you a question?
Artist: Sure!
Client: *Insert question here*

Whenever I respond to a "hey" message, the person talks like this. There's no need to drag out what could've been one message. It's a massive time waster on behave of the artist.

Also, keep in mind that maybe your inbox might be empty, the artist's inbox looks like this:

Mock Message Box:
"Hey"
"Hello"
"Hey, how are you?"
"Can we chat?"
"Can I ask you a question?"

No one wants to deal with 5-10 different people with zero text etiquette

Please State your business (3/3)
instead, do this!

Mock Conversation:
Client: Hello! I'm interested in getting an insert type of commission here. Are you still open?

Artist: Yes! Just fill out the form here: link to form once that's filled I'll review it!

This way you can say hello AND get straight to the point. That way the artist can answer your question right away, instead of forcing them to wait.

Also, you'll actually get a response from me.

Some other FYIs:
I’m not up for having idle chit-chat with strangers. My anxiety goes through the roof when talking to people I don’t know privately unless it’s for business inquiries or with really close friends. I simply don’t have the social stamina or time to maintain small talk in DMs. Especially not with more than one person. If you want a better chance of having a quick conversation, do so on my public posts (a.k.a. comments or live stream chat)

I love and appreciate your support, but not everyone is always up to expanding their social circle. Please understand the boundaries of myself and others.

Also, don’t go to my (or anyone’s) DMs and randomly drop personal information, a trauma dump, or your whole life story. It’s not safe to trust random people with information like that and it’s honestly not cool.
